BOSTON -- The Department of Labor estimates that since 2000, nearly a million American jobs have been outsourced to other countries, but the agency said some positions are less likely to be shipped overseas.

The key, NewsCenter 5's Rhondella Richardson reported Tuesday, is to consider jobs that must be done face-to-face, such as being a dental assistant. The demand for this position is likely to increase by 50 percent by 2016.

Physical therapist and occupational therapists are also unlikely to lose their jobs to outsourcing.

The DOL said the same of realtors and construction workers, who are likely to be in demand over the long term in spite of the current housing slump.

Plumbers, electricians and car mechanics will always be in demand, especially as Americans keep their cars longer instead of replacing them with new vehicles.

Other safe bets, according to lists compiled by the Department of Labor, include child care, pharmacy technicians, pet groomers, personal trainers, as well as civil jobs like police, firefighters and teachers.

The IT industry has outsourced the most jobs to foreign countries.
