Technology threatens Philippines election

The Philippine elections scheduled for next week could be delayed because of technical problems with vote-counting machines.

A presidential spokesman has hinted at a possible delay.

An official announcement is expected.

Authorities detected a major technological flaw in the vote-counting machines to be used in the country's first attempt at a computerised tallying of ballots.

The Commission on Elections now faces the difficult task of replacing memory cards for 82,000 machines if the poll still goes ahead next Monday.
